Better late than never! Seems my posts are taking longer to write but we got there in the end. This latest instalment happened Boxing Day. As we all know this is a day which has become famous for football. Everyone looking to get back into the routine as they shake of the excesses of drinking and eating all day previously.
To be honest it was a bit of a last minute decision to go to a match as funds were not looking like they were going to allow it. However when I got the itchy feet feeling on Boxing Day I knew that I had to get to a match! Flicking through the local fixtures I decided that Cheltenham Town was the best place to go as it is nearest to where I live and I knew that while I took my partner's son to his first ever League game she could go off and do a spot of shopping!
In my everyday life I work for Abbey Business Equipment in Cheltenham and have done for the last 3 years so it seems mad that this was my first visit to the stadium we sponsor. Even more annoying that after I'd paid for us to get in I found out that I could have got complimentary tickets as an employee of the sponsors. Schoolboy error! But you live and learn I suppose.....
The game itself won't win any awards. It was a fairly dull affair with the home team winning by a solitary goal. The atmosphere at the Abbey Business Stadium was mainly created by the away fans. The people from Exeter love their drumming! Still, it would have been a quiet old day as the Cheltenham fans didn't really seem to get much going. Maybe it was the Christmas hangovers.
The stadium at Whaddon Road is very basic, similar to that of a non-league ground really. One main stand of seats which we sat in and the other "banks" surrounding the pitch. The food was ok, but just burger vans really. Not the best game, stadium or experience so far, and the fact it was freezing didn't help but it was Boxing Day footy and that's all that counted!
